BREEAM/GREEN GUIDE for Thatching straw and straw thatching.

A number of growers from the eastern region signed up with Adapt UEA, Norwich for European business support to draw up a report mechanism to obtain accreditation BREEAM for thatching straw through BRE (British research establishment). The report has now been passed onto us (after delays from BRE) for consideration and decisions both from the NTSGA and the East Anglia Master Thatchers Association which is needed to play it’s part in providing info for thatching systems and specifications that need to go hand in hand with the thatching straw produced.

What’s the report all about?

The summary report presents the findings results of the research into possibility of obtaining industry accreditation to overcome some of the identified obstacles to the use of thatch in new build and in reinstatement on existing buildings.

It could mean opening up the thatching straw and thatching industry to new markets and to ‘grow’!

We all know that thatching straw has been in slow decline for decades, with the preference given to water reed thatching and little help from conservation officers to reverse the decline in the static conservation thatched roof sector, so a boost into new markets and recognition may have advantages.
